Description: The merger of the Congregation of Jesus (CJ) and the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) represents the formal reunification of two branches of the religious family founded by Venerable Mary Ward in the 17th century. Although both congregations share a common origin, charism, spirituality, and mission, historical circumstances led them to develop as distinct institutes for more than four centuries. In recent decades, a deepening recognition of their shared heritage, combined with a renewed call to strengthen communion and mission, prompted both congregations to discern the possibility of coming together as one body. Through prayerful reflection, dialogue, canonical consultations, and the expressed desire of members across the world, the two institutes advanced toward full union. The merger restores the unity originally envisioned by Mary Ward: a single institute dedicated to seeking God’s greater glory, promoting faith and justice, and serving the Church through education, pastoral ministries, and social engagement. Becoming one congregation enhances global collaboration, expands apostolic outreach, and enables more effective stewardship of resources in response to contemporary needs. This historic step affirms the enduring relevance of Mary Ward’s vision. It strengthens the collective witness of her daughters as they journey forward as one international body—rooted in Ignatian spirituality, committed to walking with those on the margins, and guided by the Gospel imperative to be “seekers of truth and doers of justice.” Official merger degree was read out on 4th November 2025 in Loyola Spirituality Centre / Loyola, Spain.
